Privacy Policy

Tourin narrates the places around you, which means we handle your location and a few other pieces of personal data to make that work. This page explains what we collect, why, and how you stay in control of it. Written in plain English — no legalese detours.

What we collect

  • Precise location — captured in the foreground, only while you have the app open and are actively using it to generate a tour. Tourin does not track your location in the background.
  • Account details — the email address you sign up with and a Firebase user ID that identifies your account.
  • Tour and location history — the places you've asked Tourin about and the narrations it generated, stored with your account so your history is there when you come back.
  • Preferences — the topics and narrator persona you choose, so tours match what you're actually curious about.
  • Feedback — thumbs ratings and comments you leave on a narration, stored per account so we can improve the stories we tell.

Why we collect it

All of it exists for one purpose: generating an AI-narrated story about where you are, in a voice and on a topic you picked. Your location tells us what's nearby. Your preferences tell us what to talk about. Your history lets you revisit places you've been. Feedback helps us make the next narration better.

The AI processors we use

To turn your location and preferences into a spoken narration, Tourin sends location context and narration text to two AI processors, acting on our behalf:

  • OpenAI — generates the narrative text for your tour.
  • Google (Gemini) — converts that narrative into spoken audio (text-to-speech).

These providers process the data we send them to produce your tour and don't use it to build a profile of you outside that. The underlying place data that informs a narration — historical facts, points of interest, natural features — is drawn from Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, OpenStreetMap, iNaturalist, and public government datasets.

Storage and retention

Your account details, preferences, tour history, and location history are stored on our servers for as long as your account exists. We keep them so the app can show you your past tours and pick up where you left off. Everything is encrypted in transit over HTTPS. When you delete your account, this data is deleted with it.

Your controls

  • Location permission — you can turn location access off at any time in your device settings. Without it, Tourin simply can't generate a tour, since there's nothing nearby to narrate.
  • Account deletion — delete your account and all associated data at any time, either from the You tab in the app ("Delete account") or by following the instructions at api.gettourin.com/account-deletion. Deletion removes your account, preferences, tour history, and location history from our systems.

What we don't do

  • We don't sell your personal data, to anyone, ever.
  • We don't run advertising or include advertising SDKs in the app.
  • We don't share your data with data brokers.
  • We don't track your location in the background — only in the foreground, at tour time.

Children's privacy

Tourin is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we'll remove it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as Tourin evolves — for example, moving from closed beta to general release. We'll update the effective date above when we do. Material changes affecting how your data is used will be communicated in the app.
